This pilgrimage was a long time coming. It's been on my bucket list since I learned the museum existed. Robert E. Howard is the reason I write pulp stories. His works introduced me to something beyond classic fiction and literature.

Lots of great things to learn about them man and his situation while trying to be a creative. Couldn't have been easy back in those days. Then to think that he banged out all of these stories on a manual typewriter.

As a bonus, I found out about Howard Days, that I now need to add to my bucket list. I'd love to meet other hard core fans of Howard's work.

Detoured off the interstate to see the home of the author Robert E. Howard here in Cross plains, TX.
I recall reading my first Conan book when I was eight or nine and “borrowing” my Dad’s book off the back of his bed. I knew he had lived, and died in Crossplains, but only recently found out the house had become a museum run by volunteers like Arlene who met us there to let us in.
If you plan on visiting: call first as a volunteer has to come meet you.

The house has been restored pretty much to what it was like when Howard lived there. It is amazing he wrote so many stories in his very small bedroom.

Arlene was very nice and knowledgeable on the subject. And I found out there is an annual gathering here.

I've been here three times, and each time it's like getting in touch with a fun little open secret of Texas history. The docents are all wonderful, and the gift shop has a better selection of Howard books than literally any major or independent bookstore. If you're in Abilene or Brownwood it's well worth the half-hour detour to see the home of one of the most brilliant pulp writers to ever live.

If you're a fan of the works of Robert E. Howard, this place is a must-see venue. The folks that organize the Robert E. Howard days event do a really good job of making you feel welcome. You'll meet writers and folks from all over the world who come to the event.

This is where it all started. Conan, Solomon Kane, and the whole sword and sorcery genre. Was a pleasure to stay and engage with the highly knowledgeable museum curator.

I didn't get to go in. I found out you have to make an appointment or go on one of the open days. However I have been wanting to see the place since I was a kid and finally got the chance. Any fan of Conan needs to go. Is it some great tourist stop, no. But, it is home to a great personality of American history. If you're in the area take the drive and just feel the spirit that is present. So glad I stopped. Was a bucket list item for me.
